“What stands when it all burns down?” asks Ashes. Rooted in ancient Jewish traditions of korban olah (fire offering) and teshuvah (atonement), the song takes on new weight amidst the destruction and unrest of the COVID-19 Pandemic and movement for Black liberation/police abolition. Like a forest fire, devastation births regeneration. This macabre nursery rhyme demands action: when massive devastation forces us to reconstruct, what do we build?
